British Gas - registering as new customer

Presumably it's possible to register as a new customer with BG when they are the incumbent supplier, by post?
Anyone had any experience of this? It seems as though they insist on phone or internet registration.

It's in the own customers interests and also those of the incumbant supplier that when moving in, a new occupier contacts the supplier a.s.a.p. with their name, date of occupation and the meter readings
This action triggers the end of the previous occupiers account and the possibility of the new customer being billed for the for previous one's use.
It also establishes a Start meter reading upon which the entire new account history will be based..
Which is why suppliers gear new occupier registration to immediate contact by phone or Email0
