A handrail could spoil the effect.

I would have to crawl up that on my hands and knees and come down on my bum! Not only because of the lack of handrail (I do have mobility problems) but mainly due to a simple fear of heights :o

You would hate the stairs at my work! They're open steps like this, but each step is made from a thick mesh with 1 inch holes in the mesh like the ones in the link below.

Hi, our stairs had no handrail - walls on either side. We meant to get one put in but were decorating first.

My son broke his collar bone tumbling down them last year.
He was 5 so well past coming down on his bottom.

Needless to say we had a handrail installed by a carpenter within weeks, holding his (good) hand in the meantime. It was £100 materials and fitting from a local carpenter which I thought was great.

Don't wait for an accident OP. Get one installed as a matter of urgency.

I agree with above posters, you can ask the ll if you can install a handrail at your own expense?
I cant see why they would not agree as long as you leave it there when you leave or make right any damage by filling in holes etc
Just a single mum, working full time, bit of a nutcase, but mostly sensible, wanting to be Mortgage free by 2035 or less!

Handrail on the wall looks fine. I can't see on what grounds your landlady could object if you are paying. I think she is being very short sighted as one of you could hurt your selves and how would she feel? (Unless of course she really couldn't care).

I drew the line at a picture of my son with his arm in a sling (which I do have) only he is smiling...you gotta have a sad face photo to go with this type of story!

She woud feel well you viewed the place, went upstairs to view the bedrooms, must have noticed no handrail to hold onto, and still agreed to rent it.

Not aimed at you personally, but from the landlady point of view.
