Secondhand books for students

Options
Can anyone remember the suggestions on where to look for secondhand books for students?

It was mentioned sometime ago, maybe a few years ago. :o

Hey - I think the best place to go is Amazon marketplace. I personally sell textbooks on there and have also bought one from someone. You have to pay postage of £2.75 on each book, but often works out cheaper than getting it new. If you search for a book on amazon, they'll be something that says 'new and used from £xx.xx'. If you click on that it'll take you to marketplace; you can search by condition and see the sellers feedback. I'd advise that you only get books from the UK because they can take a very long time to arrive from overseas (most overseas orders are from USA).

Failing that, you could try ebay, who sometimes have some good deals. I tried 'academicbooktrade' but found the site not as easy to navigate as amazon and not so many books were listed.

    Hope that helps!
  • I agree with the above post - Amazon marketplace has always proved useful to me and through my experience the books have always been of a good condition.

There is also abebooks.co.uk, which can be quiet cheap. I encountered another website recently, but I've forgotten it, so I'll let you know when I find out.

We have to be careful as some of the editions they are asking for are quite new.

The books he needs are launguage/grammar books and are quite comprehensive. So I don't think you would get them in ebook form.

Do you mind me asking what books they are?

Does he need them before he gets there? You might find that students in the year above will be selling theirs.

They are french/english grammar books and dictionarys and vocabulary books. One is by a french publishing house making it fun to locate apart from brand new and expensive.

Basically they are designed to take you right through the 4 year course.

We are just looking round now to see what the prices are and how difficult they are to get hold of.

  • Have you checked to see if your uni has a second hand bookshop? Or you will probably find students selling off their old books, for that you'll need to look around campus for notices and the like.

For second hand books http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ is far better than amazon IMHO.
    For new books http://www.123pricecheck.com/
