Hi.

so as the title says i sold the vehicle on ebay, i filled in my part of the v5 and sent it to him to sign and send off. he hasnt.

I canceled the direct debit, i rang the dvla to say i wasnt the registered keeper and gave them the name and address of the buyer. they said that was fine and they will adjust the paperwork. i received a letter saying that the tax hadn't been paid and to fill the slip in saying who now owned the vehicle. which i did. i sent that with a v5 slip for the replacement vehicle. i have received the new v5 so i know they received it.

now i have had a fine of £80 (£40 if i pay it sharpish) because the vehicle is untaxed. i have evidence from ebay when he bought it and the date of the transfer of cash from my bank statements.

any suggestions what i should do?

many thanks.

I can't see what the issue is- all you do us fill in the new keepers slip and return the V5 form to the dvla, why are they chasing you unpaid tax? Are you sure it isn't to cover the tax you owe as you cancelled the DD. I always leave the DD open till I see no more payments have been claimed and then cancel it, you may have been too quick to do so.

The keeper of the vehicle doesn't send anything to the new keeper

They hand them the new keeper slip, get them to sign the V5 then you post it to the DVLA

And why would you receive a new V5 for a vehicle you have sold?

I sold the bike via ebay, i never met the bloke. a courier collected and he paid by bank transfer. i sent it with the bike so he would sign it and then send it off, well thats what i hoped would have happened.

Why would i receive a v5 for a bike i sold. i think you missed the key words "replacement vehicle."

yeah your right. i was a little hasty to cancel it. this is an untaxed vehicle fine and unpaid arrears of just over 6 quid. so £47 quid if its paid soon. its not the end of the world just annoying that after 3 months and telling them the new keepers address and sale date twice they would have sorted it.

simply send dvla a letter stating you send the v5 off to them on x date ( even if you didnt dont tell them that) give details of new keeper in the letter and they will almost certainly cancel the fine

  • I thought you can change the registered keeper online now without having to return the V5 back to the DVLA?

This is what the used car dealer did when I bought a car last month.
