DSLR camera warranty

Hi all,
I've a Nikon DSLR camera that's recently showing some faults. One of the buttons on the camera isn't responding (possibly dust or dirt lodged in there over time). I bought this camera new from an eBay seller less than a year ago, but I was never provided with a warranty card. What I do have is a proof of purchase e.g. Paypal receipt, eBay email confirmation.
Has anyone been in a similar situation and know if Nikon would honor warranty requests? I'm unsure as this wasn't bought from a retailer approved by Nikon (although I'm pretty sure it isn't a grey import or counterfeit). This was my first DSLR and it made sense at the time to take advantage of good deals on eBay.

Wouldn't your first port of call be to contact the seller? What does their site say about warranty? Have you contacted them? These days the manufacturers often ask you to register the product on-line. You say you didn't get a warranty 'card' but you should have received some sort of warranty documentation - even if it's to tell you how to register on-line.0 -
Sadly, I didn't think too much about warranty at the time. These types of cameras are built to last quite a long time and I didn't think any faults would appear until many years later.
After a quick google search, I think the eBay seller may have been a VAT dodger who dealt in millions worth of sales. Recently they've jumped ship but from what I gather they are still operating under different trading names.0 -
It is almost certainly a grey import if you got it cheap on eBay. Who is the seller?
Only high end Nikons are sealed against dust and water ingress so if you have been using the camera in unsuitable dirty environments you may not be covered if it is not a grey import.0 -
Unless Nikon policy has changed in the past couple of years, you must have the original warranty card before they will even consider carrying out any warranty repair.0

Your remedy, if you are due one, is with the vendor. Nikon offer servicing and fixes that extend your statutory rights under warranty but that depends on you following their conditions (which almost certainly include mailing in a warranty card or the modern equivalent). In some cases they will sell cameras which are ineligible for warranty as a buyer might warrant the devices at their own facility instead.
Basically, if it came without a warranty, there is likely a reason. Go back to the vendor.0 -
This isn't really a technical issue, you will get loads of help on the Consumer Rights sub-forum or even the e-bay board, although the advice you have been given - go back to the seller - is valid.0

Nearly all sellers of cheap cameras on EBay are Hong Kong based, so that avenue is almost certainly out.0 -
If you can show that you have been sold not what you agreed to buy is the Pay Pal route still open to you or has it time expired now?0

I had a similar issue with a Nikon D700 which I bought new in the UK, it had a jamming button which I sent back to Nikon however they wouldn't fix it under warranty as they said it was due to liquid ingress. The camera was sold as dust and water resistant but it was still fairly new at the time had not even been exposed to anything. I argued the point for a while but ultimately they had me over a barrel as I needed the camera back so I paid for the repair.
It may be worth contacting Nikon and get it checked then see where you are, if they won't do it under warranty then they should at least give you a quote for the work.
