30 Y/O new driver, insanely high insurance quotes?

Hi

So my Fiance has just past her test for automatic cars and we're looking at quotes for something cheap. After a bit of searching we pointed in the direction of a Corsa, we found a Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 i 12v Energy Easytronic 3dr which is only in group 3. But the the cheapest insurance comparethemarket came back with was £2500, which was a bit of a shock seeing as younger new drivers seem to get the insurance for much cheaper.

Is there something I'm missing here? I tried switching to third party but that put the price up to £5000! Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks.

You need to get a younger fiance; trade up to a newer model.

If they've only just passed she won't get a much better deal at her age than a 17 year old, although it certainly shouldn't be MORE. Unless you're in a bad area for insurance premiums?

Perhaps check the young drivers thread, sure she may not be the same age as what they are talking about, but might give you a good indication of who to go to for decent premiums for new drivers.

It's probably the car, a Corsa is a classic "just passed my test" young drivers car and as a result a lot of them will be involved in accidents. Try the old dodge of looking for something bigger and unattractive to fashion-conscious drivers, Volvo seems to be a common recommendation.

Years ago, I used the trick of adding a second driver to the car insurance. I added my wife who had a provisional licence to my insurance. This provided me with a discount of nearly 50%. I have done this every year. I dont know why it is cheaper and what the theory behind it.

I passed my test when I was 28 (4 years ago). I think it was about £1,500.
I found that the cheaper the car, the more expensive the insurance - within reason. Basically if I spent £1500 on a car, the insurance was £2,500 where as is I spent £3,000 on a car the insurance came down to £1,500.

I figured it would be better to spend the extra on the car and have a newer, more reliable car than on the insurance.

Also a 1 litre made a big difference over 1.2ltr.

Have a look a different cards and how that compares, also dont assume that they will cost the same even if they look the same. A year difference in the model can have an impact on the cost.

I went on ebay and autotrader, found some cars I could afford and put in the reg numbers where possible. It did take a couple of hours, but it can save you a bit of money.

Year 2 wasnt a massive drop but years 3 and 4 the insurance seems to have dropped quite a bit. £750 last year, £550 this year and we shall see what October brings :-)

Try a small 1 or 1.1 litre car like a Fiat or hyundi or something unfashionable. (Group one car insurance)
Althought I don't know if there is a automatic version of them.

Did you add yourself as a second driver - or your fianc!'s mum or dad?

Corsa is the classic little boy racer car.
