Thanks guys, one more question. Once the shrubs are removed, I'm going to place pea gravel. Would just placing a liner be good enough to stop weed growth?

Be careful about pea gravel, don't go for too small a grade, it's way too tempting for local cats to poo in. When we had our garden done the first lot of gravel that went down was too small and we had to put a heavier grade on top for this reason. Our stones are about half inch diameter.

  • Thanks for the heads up slinky. We have enough trouble with cats as it is. Going to buy a few of those sound things that scare them off.

Another option might be a raised bed and grow some food.

  • Thanks for the help guys. So I've removed so of the shrubs with a lawn mower and shovel. How the front garden is, there is a square patch of grass surrounded by earth (where the shrubs are/were. Surrounding the square patch of grass is level brickwork. What's the best way to level and flatten the earth surrounding where the shrubs have been removed a day pea gravel is to be put?

you could fill it up with soil, I wonder how you get rid of shrubs with a lawnmower? If they are not completely out with the roots they might grow back.

I got rid of the shrubs down to the stump with a hedge cutter. The other plants/bushes I mowed over with the lawnmower then dug the roots out.

What I need to do now is dig up and remove enough earth so I can get it deeper than the brickwork and pavement in order to lay the pea gravel. I started to dig and put into a black liner bin but at only 10% full the bag was already looking too heavy not to break or be ignored by the bin men.

What's the best way to dispose of the earth?

If there is too much of soil hire a Skip. My council would not take any soil at all, other option is hire a hippo bag from wickes or somewhere, fill it and call the company and they will take it but you might as well check with them if you are going to put only soil in it.

Put some plastic sheet down and pile all the soil there as you dig it.

Then just advertise it on freecycle and tell people to help themselves. It'll be gone in no time.
