TIme between different types of credit applications

Hello,

I recently applied for patient finance for my dentist, however was declined on the basis of being a student despite receiving salaried funding. I am keen to apply for a credit card, partly to build my credit rating and partly to use to spread the dental costs that I can't get financed through their scheme.

Is it likely to cause a problem when applying for a credit card that I recently applied for patient finance credit? I am assuming that lenders see it all as 'credit', so I suspect I may know the answer - but I wanted to check.

If so - how long should I wait until applying? My credit rating is fairly clear otherwise - no missed payments on overdraft, mobile contract, broadband or existing credit card. According to ClearScore, the one negative on my report is having a low credit card limit.

(As a PhD student I have already had a student current account, then graduate account, however those have since run out - downside of back to back degrees)

Very grateful for any advice :)

Try a soft search on the main website, will give you an indication of likelihood of acceptance and the likely best providers to try.

Try the eligibility checker to see which cards you are likely to be accepted for.

One credit application is unlikely to have much effect on your credit file. It's usually when multiple applications are made in quick succession that lenders get a bit twitchy because it makes it look as though you are desperate for credit.
