  • Lol - I don't think I've recorded anything on a DVD for at least a decade.

    I do have an old Optiplex that is linked to my old VGA capable TV that just has stuff from YouTube on it, but I far prefer a physical copy. Looks like my next machine will be one capable of transferring recordings straight to the PC.

    I did notice that there are a lot of second hand machines on Amazon. Possibly replacing my Sony HX510 with a used one might be the answer in the shorter term.

    I'm planning on setting the PC up with a capture card for keeping stuff, at least one it's saved as a video file it's easy to back up or transfer elsewhere.

    I used to record programmes to keep, but stopped for a couple of reasons;

    1. NowTV & Netflix. Some of the stuff I would have recorded is available via these platforms, and I can watch it anytime

    2. Box sets (in DVD and BluRay form) come along sooner and sooner after first broadcasts these days, and for cheaper and cheaper. I weighed up the time I spent recording, editing out adverts, and transferring to media to keep, and decided I'd rather spend on the official product later.

    OK, there's a third

    Many of the Freeview channels are devoted to extensive repeats of stuff. Tune into Dave late in the evening, and there's always a Mock the Week, early evening E4 always has a Big Bang Theory, etc etc. If it was missed first time round, there's almost always a repeat

    OK, there's a fourth

    Having recorded loads of stuff 'to keep', I realised that I hadn't watched hardly any of it since I recorded it. Much of what I have recorded in the past is music programming, and with a few notable exceptions, I found I preferred to just listen, rather than watch.
