ok, can someone please just explain the use of Tomcat and Resin
are they just there to ACT as a webserver
for testing purposes (servlets, php etc.)?
or is there something more that im not getting?

Tomcat and Resin are Java servlet containers. They'll run Java-based web applications.
Tomcat and Resin can also run as a standalone webserver i.e. no need for Apache/IIS/Zeus etc.
If you want to use PHP with Tomcat see this wik page.
IIRC Tomcat is a reference implementation which means its built to adhere to the Servlet Container specification and not for speed. This does not mean its slow just that its primary designe goal is to adhere to the spec.
Containers such as Resin and Jetty are designed with performance in mind (and will still adhere to the spec).0 -
