I want to buy a new car, half cash, half credit card, (which to me is all cash) we have looked at a few cars, but when I try & barter for some knocked off for cash they all "say we dont do that, the price on the car is the cash price?" I dont believe them, how do I get then to knock some off? I dont want to pay full price, thanks x

You're using the wrong approach, they won't give a discount 'for cash', as the price needs to be the same for customers regardless of how they pay for it. Also if the dealer offers finance, they will earn more from a customer paying on finance rather than cash so there's no real incentive to give a discount for paying cash anyway.

The best thing is to haggle on the price before you discuss payment methods, and if pushed say you're undecided, considering finance but may pay from savings - something along those lines and work on haggling the price. But haggling usually takes some effort, you can't just walk in and ask for a discount!

It could also be the case that the car is actually well priced, some dealers don't give anything off the screen price at all.

Are you looking at used cars or brand new?

As above, no dealer is going to give you a discount "for cash" as

    (a) they're then not going to make commission on the finance
    (b) you've no trade in, so they cant make money on that
    (c) they have to pay the bank to lodge cash
    (d) half your payment is by credit card for which they'll have to pay around 2% in fees.

A credit card isn't cash - dealers have to pay transaction costs (typically at least 2%) on that part of your payment.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

And many dealers pass this on to the customer. I have seen it in some dealers.
