If your car is a write off you probably won't be entitled to a courtesy car for more than a few days, if at all.0 -

From my own experience; and when courtesy car's were offered within the policy rather than an add on; the moment a policyholders damaged car is declared a write off/total loss, the courtesy car has to be relinquished.
This has occurred during two non fault claims, when I was a named driver on ex partners policies.
On one occasion, the Courtesy car was delivered in the morning, then collected from my ex partners work, without her knowledge, mid afternoon the same day, due to partners car being declared a write off in the meantime
On another occassion, we tried to hold on to the courtesy car but the insurance said we won't be covered to drive it?
My ex partners had to hire cars and claim back cost, which if these were fault claim, they wouldn't of been able to claim the hire cost back ?0 -

Fully comprehensive cover provides alternative car for maximum of 14 or 21 consecutive days in any one instance and a maximum of 21 or 28 days in any one policy year, depending upon the level of cover chosen. This applies either while car is being repaired because of any damage following a claim or until your claim is settled if your own car is affected by fire, theft or is written off.
Churchill
For an extra premium you can take out Guaranteed Car Hire and Guaranteed Car Hire Plus, both of which offer a courtesy car in the event of fire damage, accident damage, damage as a result of theft, if car is stolen or written off or if the car is awaiting repair. It will also provide a courtesy car if you use your own garage for any repairs.0 -

Unfortunately, when sifting through quotes, options and add on's, it's not so clear cut.
Insurance providers and comparison websites seem to offer many quotes with slight variation in price, relating to slight differences of cover and options, which only the most pedantic will notice.0 -
Another sneaky clause found within the wording of an insurance policy:
"Cover may not be provided for malicious damage, theft or attempted theft if you stated that your car will be garaged and the incident occurs when your vehicle is not garaged but is within the vicinity of your declared garaging address."
What is meant by " Cover may not be provided " a sneaky opt out clause I wonder ?
More often than not, my car is garaged at night, an option I select on Comparison Websites when searching for insurance quotes, however, normally I don't place the car in the garage until late and some nights, it's parked on the drive all night.
How far does this clause extend.......on some occasions, I park my car overnight on the street outside my girlfriends house; therefore, as it not parked in a garage overnight, does this mean my car is not insured ?

I don't pay extra for them.
Claiming uninsured losses, I am perfectly capable of keeping receipts and writing to the third party insurer myself to get my uninsured losses covered.
When I wanted to claim personal injury, I went to a local solicitor, and they billed the third party insurer direct.
Courtesy car must be as standard on my policy, as I got one for 7 days when my car was a write off when I had an at fault accident.0 -

We have to consider the worse case scenario, such as, writing letters keeping receipts, visiting solicitors etc, when injury has been sustained during the accident, especially if time in Hospital is also required; from my own experience, its been much easier to make the one phone call to my insurance and let them do all the work and I've never sustained what can be regarded as serious injury.Tammykitty wrote: »Courtesy car must be as standard on my policy, as I got one for 7 days when my car was a write off when I had an at fault accident.
Perfect example of checking the small print; we shouldn't have to, what's part of the policy should be clearly stated without different interpretations of such options and clauses.
My ex partners insurance clearing stated a courtesy car was included in the event of a claim......... Only in the small print of sub section 4, paragraph 3, section iii did it state " only if the vehicle is reparable "0 -

It is what it says.
If you leave it on your drive, or the street outside your house it isn't fully covered.
You declared it would be garaged when at home, so they quoted you based on the risk of say the garage collapsing rather than the risk of someone hitting it in the street, or vandalising it on the drive (which are more likely), so you paid a reduced premium to reflect the reduced risk.
My motorbike is not insured for theft within so many yards of home unless it is secured in the locked garage that I told them I had to get the premium down.
Oddly, some popularly nickable cars, (like fast audis for ram raiding purposes) are cheaper to insure on the street than on the drive, as the insurers have worked out that the crims might not know which house to break into to get the keys.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

How ironic is this....... Changed most recent/current quote, via actual insurers website, to "car parked overnight on drive " and it's cheaper than when I selcted "garaged" and my car is not a ram raiding Audi.
£6 less, whether parked on a street near my home or on the drive compared to being garaged overnight.
So, will a car not be covered when parked overnight in the garage because the "normally parked overnight on the street" option was selected ....... there appears to be too many ifs and buts0 -
Courtnesy car was included in my policy as standard, I wouldn't bother paying extra, I can use my Mum's if needed and also I get the bus to work.
Leal protection was worth it for me earlier in the year, vehicle wrote offmine outside my house 1 morning, cheque received from my insurer but minus my £400 excess, legal protection processed and got it back.
However I was not entitled to a courtnesy car anyway as my vehicle was a write off when I took to the garage, I knew before hand as they told me over the phone if deemed a write off, I knew it would be.0
