Idiot needs help with dreamweaver and uploading

Hi folks
I have a tiny little site, which I wrote myself, and uploaded it years ago with ws_ftp. Now, I've got a copy of dreamweaver, and have a spiffy new version, extended, 8 pages, of the site. I have no clue as to how to upload the new pages to the site, can't figure it out after sitting here for 1.5 hours.
I'm really pushing at the boundaries of my knowledge here - I know very little about all this, but I do enjoy fiddling around with html. So I've fiddled, and done it, and now its just sitting there on my home computer, I can't get it on the net. Are there easier ftps nowadays than ws_ftp? Is there a(or rather, what is the) correct path within dreamweaver to get documents up onto the web? I can't figure out the correct question to ask in the help box.

All answers gratefully received.

Hi folks

Well to upload your files you need an ftp client. I use Filezilla: http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client
Get the one you need dependin on your OS, so click the first download to get a windows verion.
Once you install it, you need your ftp details such as the host, username and password.
Once you do this then all your files on the remote server (webhost) will appear on the left and on the right pen the folder where your new 8 pages are and then its a matter of drag and drop!
I hope the above helps.0 -
Thanks both - wow, that was speedy - and you're both newbies, in these sigs anyway, thats very kind!
I do have my login details for my server. As for it being easier from within dreamweaver, well, thats why I posted here, I'm afraid, I couldn't find out how to do it in dreamweaver. Perhaps I'm not quite an idiot with it all, but I'm certainly not intuitive, lets say. I *can* use a ftp, since I've already used ws_ftp, so maybe I'll try filezilla, which I've seen discussed on this site before - that seems like the new favourite.
I'll report back - probably not today, as I have to do my *real* work now (which the website advertises, lol) but I need to do it really soon.
Thanks again2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Don't bother using a separate ftp program because you can do it all in Dreamweaver. It also has a Synchronise function to upload/delete only the pages that have changed, though this isn't really needed on a small site like yours.
There are some useful tutorials, including setting up and publishing a site at Getting Started with Dreamweaver 8.0 -
I assume you created a Site in Dreamweaver.
So open up Dreamweaver on the menu bar accross the top select
Site,
Manage Sites
Select your site from the list and then click Edit
Select Advanced Tab
then Remote Info from the list
Then set it up as follows
Access: FTP
FTP Host : Your FTP URL or IP address
Host Directory : Can Be left empty
Login: Your Ftp Username
Password : Your Ftp Password
Check the Save Check Box
Check Use Passive FTP
Check Maintain Sycronization information
Then click test and u should get a pop up saying that dreamweaver connected successfully.
Assumeing you get the success msg click Okay and then Done.
Now select the files window where u can see all your local website files and up in the Top right hand corner you will see a dropdown box saying Local View, select Remote View and you will see the files on you web host, enusure you select the correct directory to replace you current website files, then return to Local View and select the files u want to upload to your web host and click the blue arrow that is pointing towards the top of the screen, and your files will be uploaded to you web host.
Hope that helps a little0 -
Me again
Thanks everyone. I'm now much more confident that I can sort it - I'd really hate to lose all that work. I will post when I get the thing up.
Good weekend to all.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Just thought I'd post an update on what I've been doing...
... I've followed Spire128's instructions to the letter - it would have been impossible without that level of detail, spire, thank you so much - also deleted the old files, and still, nada! zip! rien! . So I've sent an email to the lovely man who looks after the server and asked him if I've put the files in the wrong folder (except I put them in the folder where the original files were, so I don't see what I'm doing wrong). Still, email guy is very patient with the basic errors that my non-intuitive brain keeps making, he'll doubtless sort out this last glitch tomorrow.
So thanks! And I will make that last update (one day.............) that the site is operational.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Final note on this! Email guy at my web host has put the files into the correct directory, so its all up there now! Thanks again, peeps!!!2023: the year I get to buy a car0
