I haven't tried the council for a water butt, I have 3 almost free compost bins from them so I might be on a 'what a bloody cheek' blacklist by now0

I think they have a different list for their butts or perhaps they'd simply turn the other cheek seeing as it now their butts your requesting and not their bins.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most "proper" water butts come with a top and you buy (or it comes with it) a kit to tap into the down pipe from your roof. Other than that, yes, anything that'll stay put will do to cover one. I use an old carpet tile cut to shape.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. If you collect all your rainwater & use it in the summer on the garden, I believe you can get a reduction on the water removal part of your water bill. Thus - not only do you get no-charge rainwater (at the right temp), you also get a reduction in your water bill.Nice to save.0

A few but that's only because it's stuck under the ivy growing over the wall. I only use it for watering the garden though so it doesn't really matter much.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

After all you get charged for the water coming in to the house, then get charged again for dealing with the effluent going out.
Edit: I looked up my bill. I get charged approx £1 per cubic meter for my water and then approx £2 per cubic meter for effluent disposal. So with my small 1/2 cu mtr barrel I save approx £1.50 per empty and fill cycle.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. apprentice tycoon - I know I'm probably stating the obvious ... but, where ever you plan to place it, it's better off sited out of the sun. When I encouraged a friend to get one, she put her's south facing and couldn't understand why it smelled and didn't appear to gather much.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Southern Water sent out a leaflet with the last bill offering a complete water butt kit for £30.
For that you get -
200 litre water butt
Water butt stand
Rain diverter kit
Child safe lid
You can either pay £30 and get free delivery of have it on approval for 60 days but then pay an additional £4.95 for delivery so the total you would pay would be £34.95.
Also for sale were composter kits if anyone was interested.
The complete water butt kit seems cheaper than buying it anywhere else including the likes of B&Q.
If you wanna know more or place an order - ring 0845 130 6565 and quote reference SW10.
Or order onlinewww.sw2u.com
These offers are only open to customers in the Southern Water supply area (according to the leaflet) and offers close 31.03.06.
Allow 28 days for delivery.
If you live in another waer supply area it is still worth ringing up - I'll be willing to bet they supply other water board customers too.0
