Multiple cars / NCDs

Car insurance is up for renewal and I'm slightly confused about the NCD status for the two cars I own.
Car A was bought in April 2011 and used daily until July 2013 when a new job with a company car was started. I however kept the insurance running to ensure that NCD was not lost. Retired in September 2015 and car A became my only car again.
In November 2015 I bought car B, insurance on car A was switched to car B. Car A put onto SORN.
In May 2016 I re-taxed car A and added it to my existing policy as second car, getting a multi car discount.
Now my insurance is up for renewal at the end of August and the insurance company (and this is the same company that has been since before 2011) have stated:
Car B - 12 years NCD (protected)
Car A - 15 years NCD (unprotected)
The NCD for car B is as I expected, however I was expecting the NCD for car A to be zero.
So can I safely apply elsewhere for separate insurance policies on both cars and claim to have individual NCDs?
