DIY Custom Kitchen Extractor

Hi all,

First thread on the MSE forum so I hope it's a good one :)

I'm looking to make a custom kitchen extractor unit to sit in our new extension. I've seen it done and have images but can't post links as a noob but if you were to look for DeVol kitchens site and go to the Balham kitchen you'll get what I mean

The idea is I'll have wide diameter spiral ducting sitting horizontally above the kitchen/hob at the wall and duct it straight out an external wall. it'll be around 3m long and include a fan and grease filter. Nothing fancy, just minimal, industrial and functional.

My questions are:

1. What kind of fan is best to use? I want it to be really powerful and shift a lot of air as it's got a big room to get the smells out of.

2. Where is best to site it? inline or on an external wall?

3. How can I fit a grease filter into this set up?

I hope that's clear, please give me a shout with any more questions.

much appreciated

Phil

It's hard to tell from the pics, and I've installed a few standard extractors, but am no pro, but is this picture showing part of a larger industrial installation with the kitchen extractor just part of the system as I can't see where the motor etc is on this?

I'd say you're better to vent to an external wall with the shortest run possible. If you're intent on doing this, I'd cannibilise a standard extractor for the motor and modify (butcher) the grease filter to fit?

Be interesting to see what others come up with!

If you want it to look a bit like the one in the photo then the grease filter will be built into the grill section above the cooker. The theory being that if there is a grease build up you stop I before it gets into your duct work. Just as a heads up, fans etc. attached to spiral are quite clunky, in the picture I imagine it would be hidden behind the masonry wall to the right of the intake grill. Also, spiral duct work tends to be galvanised and not polished like the picture so painting could be a better option? There are lots of manufacturers of extract fans, it could be worth a quick sketch of what you want to do and emailing it over to them. They all have tech support departments who would be able to give you good advice. I like the idea, good luck.

It's attractive though I'm dubious about how effective it would be without the traditional hood arrangement
  • Hi Flashg67, Kiran & Coffeehound.

thanks for the input, much appreciated.

I think there must be a motor in the boxing at one side. I don't have a lot of space to box anything in (and as I'm not having any wall units I don't want to put boxes in everywhere.) so I may look at an external fan unit and just have the ducting inside.

I have found a 900 cu m/h from Luxairhoods called 52cm Canopy Hood with LED Lights - Stainless Steel - sorry, still not allowed links. From the specs it looks like the motor is around 150mm wide which would fit into some galvanised spiral ducting - which I can get at a range of widths. Then all I'd have to do it get the grease filter to fit into the ducting in some way.

By using a powerful fan I'm hoping that would get round not having a traditional canopy.

The other option would be to have the ducting coming in from the external wall, 90 degree angle above the cooker so that the 'mouth' of the ducting is directly above the cooker, asking as the hood. I'd just have to make the filter fit the round opening which shouldn't be too difficult.

I've got a company in Leicester calling me back today about it but they only do commercial kitchens but might be able to help.
