Contents insurance family definition

My sister is going to be coming to stay with my husband and me for an extended period in our home and I am investigating contents insurance. As my full sister, does anybody know whether she is considered to be "family" under the majority of policies? I would hope so, but none of the policy documents seem to detail this. She will not be paying rent.

Many thanks in advance.

Yes you can include her as family for Contents, provided your house will become her permanent main residence for a period. In the event of a claim, the Insurers might look for evidence she lives at the address. This might be having her Bank account or other official accounts registered to your address, so they can see she is at the address.

If you just took out Contents Insurance including your Sister as family at the address, if she had a theft of her items, then Insurers might ask for proof she lives at the address. Hence why she should register things at the address, so she has paperwork to confirm this.

Do make sure you include the full value of your Sisters Contents within the Sum Insured and if she has anything to cover that she wears away from home e.g jewellery, that you obtain details from her, so you can take out cover on the correct basis.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
