Advice about old internal doors

Actually, if you're after a quick solution, in my current house everything used to be dark stained (I know the people who lived here in the 1980's) and most of it has since been painted white.
Where there are chips it's easy to tell that they have been painted with that chalk paint - where you don't sand or use an undercoat and just paint over everything. This is popular for painting furniture and can also be used for doors etc.
Chalk paint is susceptible to chips. However, after the chalk paint you can paint over with whatever you like for a finish coat, eg satinwood, so that's another option for you if you don't fancy the wallpaper idea (lol, I'm helpful, me, aren't I?!)0 -
Water-based paint doesn't yellow, AFAIK."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I'm looking for some advice about how feasible it to paint/stain dark mahogany veneer internal doors either white or a much lighter wood colour please - we can't afford to replace them (with new ones anyway) but they look dated, dark, tatty and just awful!
I've done it. It isn't particularly tricky but two good coats of undercoat are a must. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
I can definitely concur with the advice about gloss. I used brilliant white gloss on my woodwork about five months ago and it has already yellowed. About to change to a satinwood instead.
I was admiring someone's decoration recently and all of her woodwork looked like new and wasn't done in gloss. I couldn't believe it when she told me she had done it about ten years ago. Looked as if it had just been done.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I used Dulux undercoat and Dulux professional liquid gloss in my bedroom (South facing) over 3 years ago and it is still bright white. The hallway was done 4 years ago and has yellowed slightly as it gets little or no direct sun light.0

We had our bannisters professionally painted a few years ago, the decorator used Trade paint and it's not gone yellow. It's quite a bit more expensive than ordinary but worth it in terms of longevity. You can buy the Trade paints in B&Q, you don't have to go to a trade outlet.
I'd certainly recommend going with satinwood as a finish. We glossed the doors in our last house and regretted it as they looked 'cheap'. The satinwood ones we have now are much nicer. We painted them about 7 years ago with Trade paint and they still look nice and white.Make £2025 in 2025

Thanks for all of the advice - I'm going to try Satinwood and use the inside of the airing cupboard door as my guinea pig!0
