My child is going to school

My son is four and is going to school in September. We've already bought him uniform, but what more? School information pack says only about uniform and school bag.
Any advice? I remember when my son was a baby, I bought lots of things I didn't need after all. I think it can be similar with school. So, what do you think?

He might need a water bottle. What about PE kit? Coat he can manage to do up himself.

We've got PE kit. No, we didn't buy water bottle, good point.

Do the school not give a list of things you need? If not I would wait and see what is required on day 1 and take it from there.

They don't need a lot. Uniform, pe kit, water bottle, our school say boots as they do lots of outdoor muddy stuff, if they are having packed lunch then a lunchbox, but they get free dinners now.

I never had to supply any stationery items for either of my two throughout their Primary school years. This isn't ages ago either, DD is 13, DS 16.

It might depend on the school though. I do know it definitely depends on where you live. Once on holiday I met an Irish lady who detailed all the school supplies she had to equip her children with and was amazed and envious that I'd never had to buy as much as a pencil!

In that case, that's all you need!

A sun hat to wear at break times. You never know it might be sunny in September!

And name tags on absolutely everything.
  • The school send you a list of the things the child need every year

That age and it is really only school uniform and a back sack. Next year it will be that plus basic pencil case. Year after it will be the previous plus

As their skill sets get higher, their equipment needs will raise. At this age the bag is to get them used to bringing on, plus something to bring the reading books and paintings home in

    Be guided by the school
