Locked Out of Document Drive Since Loading Wizip

Morning all,

I'm currently in the middle of a melt down, and looking for a little of help with regards to my problem, which I'll explain as fully as I can, but please be advised that I am not very computer savvy.

OK, earlier this morning I was transferring some very large files on to my new PC and had installed Winzip, and all seemed to be perfectly fine. However, when I returned to my PC to organise the files into a particular order, I was not allowed to access the Documents directory, which now shows as being empty (which is where I had placed the zipped file with the rest of my other files).

I went through the security steps it highlighted, to allow me to access the Doc directory, but it still keeps saying access denied, in frustration, I firstly uninstalled Winzip, but I was still denied access, my next action was to just restore the PC back to an earlier point, but this also did not work, as the restore points only show as far back as 9:46am. Is there any other way that I can set my PC to restore it back to yesterday? I am using Windows 7, and I have been searching without success to find this option.

Thanks in advance for your help, and I appreciate any assistance or alternative advice you can offer me before my hair falls out.

Where did you get winzip from ??Paid for or free .

As Winzip does not usually delete the files once zipped - unless you tell it to.

If you were just "moving" files then Winzip will have nothing to do with it.

If you've accidently deleted your files then your restore will not help in recovering the files back. But run Recuva (it's free) and see if it can help.

    Hi JSHM2,

I haven't deleted the files they're still there when I look in Winzip, the problem I am experiencing is that when trying to access the files I am receiving error messages stating that I no longer have access to the Document Drive and cannot access them. On a positive note however, I went into the Recent Places Directory and can access them from there, and so I am in the process of saving all files to a USB until I have worked out what the problem is.

    Many thanks for your advice.

Why did you install Winzip? Windows since XP has been able to zip and unzip files without 3rd party software.

I didn't realise that at the time, I certainly do now.

Update: Just a quick note to say that after much faffing about, I have solved my PC problem of being locked out of the Documents Directory by going into the security and authorisation settings, I discovered that the allow access boxes had automatically switched over to deny access to all users, and so I just switched them all back over.

Thanks for all of your help.

Are you looking at "My Documents" or the documents library?

Since Win7, there has been this POS library "feature" that's not actually a folder, but a combination of several folders, a virtual library. If anything screws with this, it can look as though all your stuff has been deleted.

The giveaway is the "Documents library" text at the top of where the files would normally be.

Your actual documents folder location should be "C:\Users\%username%\Documents"

Pop that ^^ into the start menu search field and hit enter.

    Hi Strider590,

Thanks so much for the helpful tips and information.

It was actually in My Documents, and the only files I could actually access was the Pictures Directory. I have however since solved the problem (after much pulling out of hair) I went into the Security / Authorisations folders, and eventually found that a whole section of access areas had switched from Allowed to Denied, so I just re-set them, and touch wood, all is working well again.

Thanks once again for your help, and I will take note of what you said regarding the different files.

    Best wishes
