Dirty Tricks by MBNA

I have sucessfully reclaimed over £1000 pounds on my MBNA credit card and I now only owe a very small amount.

I noticed that my card had expired and I hadn't been sent a new one. I rang MBNA and they updated my details (nothing different from before, only now on more money) and said something would come through the post.

Have just recieved a letter saying that my request has been declined due to .... your current financial standing and/or the conduct of your MBNA credit card account....!!?!

I was fuming, has this happend to anyone else? Can I complain about it? Not bothered about not having the card, its just the principle!

  • Not surprised at all. You have just grabbed some dosh back from MBNA so they no longer want you as a customer. They are perfectly at liberty to do this in the same way that you are perfectly at liberty to dump MBNA.

Lets say you and I live fairly close to each other and work at the same place. I agree to give you a lift to work each day on the understanding that you will share the running costs for my car - 40p/mile, making your share 20p/mile.

You're happy with the 'contract', and agree to pay me at the end of the week. However, when Friday comes you decide to offer me only 7p/mile - because my fuel costs are 14p/mile and you've only 'used' my petrol. When I complain, you point out that I would incur costs for depeciation, tax, insurance, and servicing whether you were in the car or not.

Now...how are you going to get to work on the following Monday morning? ;)

Best thing you can do with that £1k is to spend it on a financial awareness course.......
Aiming to be debt free....but still off target
  • I wouldn't let it get to you.

Penalty charges are unlawful. If you knew they were unlawful you wouldln't have signed up to them.

  • MBNA may have the right to do this, but they should have either given you notice of their intention not to renew your card, or advised you that they had done so. In any event, it makes them look childish.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

In my book it makes sound business sense NOT to give notice.
Just think how much debt you might rack up if you thought that your card was going to be taken away.

I'm not the most pro-Bank poster here, but even I can understand this - 'The Law of Unintended Consequences'. Be positive, look at other posts about MBNA, think yourself lucky that you are shot of them and with £1,000. Re the sarky comments, just ask yourself - Who paid back the £1,000 and were not prepared to defend their position? Was it OP? I think not, so direct your comments to the right villains.
