Backdated pay dispute

In April 2012 I was slotted to a role during a restructure, although similar the new role had more responsibility so I asked my manager about regrading the salary. I was told another restructure would be taking place within 6 months and it would be regraded then. Again I was slotted and again I was told the same that regarding wouldn't take place yet as another restructure was coming.
Finally in August 2015 the role was regraded and the salary increased but they will only backdate my pay to January 2015. The letter states it's because I didn't formally request a regrade but I have emails to my manager about being unhappy about the issue and I didn't know I could request a regrade, that was what I was discussing with them and taking guidance from my manager. Any advice would be much appreciated thank you.

They are under no obligation, legally, to back date it at all. So if they have said no, I'm not clear that there is anywhere to take this. You could submit a grievance, but I don't see it coming up with a different answer, and it's likely to annoy them.0
