What social class do Farmers belong to?

I've done a fair bit of research on the internet but can't find any results, really.

Obviously every trade is a rough guide but would you consider a Farmer a working class person? The ones I know of own lots of land, have a fair bit of disposable income and drive Range rovers - not to mention their families/children being heavily involved in Equestrianism etc, which isn't working class by any means.

Sorry, this is probably the wrong section to post this!

Wealthy land owners. Some are savvy business men as well.

I would say it depends on the farm.

small farmers are probably working class

Medium - large farmers - middle class

Large farm owners, who don't do any of the farm work - upper class

Whereas the ones I know around here use baler twine to hold up their twenty year old trousers.

Social class doesn't exist any more, modern society is too blurred compared to when it applied, at least in the old upper, middle and lower/working class model

for example, what would be classed as 'Middle' now days, means that the adults in the family would probably work in professional careers, and require 2 full time working adults to maintain the level of wealth

Only people obsessed with class, usually upper-middle and embarrassed about it, say things like this :-)

Most farmers I know are too independent and isolated to be considered part of the class system.
  • I have to disagree that the social class system is completely outdated.

For example, social circles. Those in particular circles, such as Hunting (equestrian), will be incredibly different to those who, for example, attend West Ham football matches.

Sometimes they are mixed but I have to disagree that there isn't a defined class system.
