hi
I bought a security light from an independant online retailer which offered the best price online,
I e-mailed beforehand to check the product was OK and met with great customer service.
Went ahead and purchased the light.
11 months down the line the light failed and because its an LED type unable to replace the bulb.
I felt relieved as it came with a 3 year warrenty.
I e-mailed British General to explain what had happend and for advice
but there was never any response to my e-mails
i rang them and was told that these lights breaking was a common problem and advised to return it back to the online store.
Whenever I contacted the store I never received any reponses to my e-mails or phone calls
I found the receipt for the website which is no longer working server not found so i can only presume they are no longer trading.
I tried telling this to the manufacturer but no joy,
I just kept being told that I must contact the retailer.
Where do i legally stand because if the manufacturer states in their terms that its guarenteed for 3 years,
most hightstreet stores say you need to contact the manufacturer if it breaks down after the first year.
Can you legally force a manufacturer to honour their agreement?

The manufacturer is right in pointing you to place of purchase, However in my opinion what they should do, is ask you to return the lamp in exchange for a replacement, so that they can find out why it failed.0

A fair few manufacturers will only deal with warranty claims through one of their authorised resellers and provided that this requirement is stated in their warranty T&C's, they aren't doing anything wrong.
It might be worth seeing if you can find a local stockist for British General goods and asking them if they would be able to arrange for the faulty light to returned back to the manufacturer.0 -

I have looked at the terms of the three year guarentee on their website see http://www.luceco.com/uk/lamps-warranty
Luceco LED Lamps – 3 Year Warranty Luceco LED lamps are protected by a 3 year guarantee from date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship (unless otherwise stated).
Should a product fail to perform as described within the warranty period it will be repaired or replaced with the same or equivalent product by Luceco Ltd, free of charge provided that you:
(1) return the product to us with shipping charge prepaid,
(2) provide us with proof of the original date of purchase and
(3) quote our return authorisation number.
Repaired or replaced products will be returned to you with shipping charges prepaid. Replacement products may be refurbished or contain refurbished materials. If in our sole discretion, we are unable to repair or replace a defective product, we will refund the purchase price of the product.
This warranty will not apply if in our judgement, the product fails due to damage in shipment, handling, storage, accident, abuse or misuse, or if it has been used in a manner not conforming to our product instructions, has been modified in any way, or has any serial number removed or defaced. Repair or attempted repair will void this guarantee. Our maximum liability under the terms of this warranty is limited to the purchase price of the product covered by the warranty.
Normally from my own past experience manufacturers have always been accomodating with regards to resolving problems with non-working products, but not this company.0 -
https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/Documents/Advice%20factsheets/Consumer%20Affairs/c-guarantees.pdfA free guarantee for goods, including goods supplied with a service, is legally
binding on the person offering the guarantee if the goods were bought on or
after 31 March 2003. Guarantees for goods are usually provided by the
manufacturer and give you extra rights in addition to the rights you already
have against the seller. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

It's possible (unlikely but still possible) that when you purchased your light 11 months ago, the terms of the warranty were different to those now shown on the website and at that time it was a requirement to return any faulty goods back via one of their stockists.0 -

I have the same guarantee included with the instruction leaflet which is identical to the one on the website.0
