Refund if electric account is in credit

I have received the annual review of my electric supply account with E-on, and it is over £100 in credit, legally am I entitled to a refund of that credit amount?

E-on has reduced the monthly direct debit for the next year by the credit amount divided by 12, but I would prefer a refund.

It may be in your terms and conditions that anything under a certain £XXXX will be used this way to reduce future payments.

Why not ring them and ask...

Just ask for it back. That's all I do if it gets too far over but I keep an eye on my consumption myself and get the DD adjusted so it doesn't.

I've got monthly meter readings going back over six years so I know what my consumption should be at any time of the year and can therefore do my own predictions and calculations.

    From Eon's web pages https://www.eonenergy.com/for-your-home/contact-us
If you pay by monthly Direct Debit it’s normal to build up a credit over the summer months. The credit will then be used during the winter when you’re likely to use more energy. You can still request a refund, but your future Direct Debit payments may need to change.
If you pay by cash or cheque, your credit will automatically be taken off your next bill.
If you still want a refund we’ll need to make sure you’re billed up to date, so you’ll need to provide us with an actual meter reading. You can submit your meter reading online or by calling us on 0345 052 0000. Please take the reading before calling, as we’ll ask for this first. If you’d prefer to email us, you can do this here https://www.eonenergy.com/for-your-home/contact-us.

If you log in to the Eon web site before going to the "contact us" link it will fill in your details for you

When Eon did my review last November they automatically refunded £70.

I thought it was a bit silly of them as winter approached and only now has my account broken even.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Yes, you can certainly obtain a credit balance refund from any energy supplier, provided up-to date readings are provided - it's your rights.

However, how easy it is to get, is another matter. However, I'm confident that E.ON will not be too much trouble to get a refund from.
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

I wish I was in credit right now as it would help through the coming autumn and winter. I'd wait and see.
  • Refunds should be requested after the winter around March or April on the gas account for GCH customers. Unless you are desperate for the money its not a good idea to go into the winter months starting in November on a low surplus as it wont take too many cold days to get in debit.
I like to think that the suppliers are giving me a cracking good rate compared to standard /variable so I will reward them by leaving them my money in their bank instead of the bank where I can collect next to nothing in interest. Its better in their bank than in mine at the moment.
Ovo actually pay a really top rate of I think its 3 % on all credits .

Good morning jolly4roger and welcome to the forums :)

Yes of course you may ask for this back, we just need to make sure the account is billed up to accurate reads and we can go from there.

It sounds like we've reduced the Direct Debit payments already to include the credit, so we can just re-calculate this and increase them for you.

You may also be interested to know that you can produce real time bills and balances via your online account, this will keep the account fully up to date.

You can then use the Direct Debit manager tool, this lets you change your payment amount by up to 20% with accurate reads, so if you feel you're paying too much or little you can adjust this yourself.

    Hope this info is useful.

    Thank you

    Helena :)
