moving mains electric cable

Hi, help needed.

We want to install a new front door. Had a surveyor over on tuesday, he did the measurements etc, but at the end of his survey he said that if we want to continue with the installation we would have to move the mains electric cable as it is currently going through the door frame and their company dont do anything with electric cables.

Is moving the cable a scottish power job, or could a regular sparky do it.

Any comments or advice welcome.

Assuming you can move the cable without cutting it, you won't need either. Can you not cut the door frame away?

What type of cable is it? Where does it go? What is it attached to?

Was thinking of cutting the old frame as they would be installing a new frame with the door, asked if they could fit a new frame over the cable (cable is covered) and he refused, saying that if i cant move the cable they wont be doing the door.

Might hack away at some bricks to make room for it.

If needs must and i have to move the cables entry point into house (consumer unit is behind froont door), could a sparky do it or would i have to get scottish power out to have a look, looking for the cheapest option.

I have a photo, but cant post it to the thread

If its from the road up to your meter, then its a job for your local distributor (not necessarily your supplier) and probably with some significant delay and cost. If its after the meter, an electrician should be able to help.

It sounds a bit odd for the main incoming supply cable to come in through a hole drilled in the front door frame. Do you think you could post a picture?

Off the record ;) I'd get a *decent* sparky to sort it.

Once you get 'official' network people involved they will probably want you to move out for a week, close the road with traffic lights etc etc :D

  • Are you sure that's the incoming main and not a supply to a shed etc?

If it is the incoming main then your DNO will have to disconnect and reconnect and this may involve an in-the-street disconnection which will cost more.

However any decent window fitter should be able to cut the old window out and fit a new window round it.
