Comodo internet security premium settings advice, please

Hi

Just done a fresh reinstall of my computer as it was playing up. I had free Avast antivirus before but decided to change it as does not seem as good these days.

I have installed the free Comodo internet security premium instead.

Am I okay to leave all the settings as they are, or do I need to 'tweak' any? I never understand half of them - even though I DO try to. There just seems to be too many options with too many boxes to decipher it all.

I would appreciate any help, thanks :)

There's quite a bit of of info on the web but have you tried Comodo's own website?

    Try here for starters.

    There certainly is.

Although not requiring a degree in computer sciences to set up, some of its features can be complicated to configure by the casual user as opposed to the more technically minded who feel confident in fiddling with its configuration options.

If Comodo is set up to take advantage of its advanced configuration options it can be a pretty formidable piece of kit but it really depends on your surfing habits, what level of protection you’re looking for, your level of expertise and how much time and effort you’re prepared to put into it.

If, like many, you think life is already too short there are a number of set-and-forget options like Bitdefender Free and Panda Cloud, but for something a little more comprehensive than these take look at Qihoo 360 Total Security, Sophos Home or similar.

Otherwise, bite the bullet, read the tutorials and press on with Comodo…if set up properly it’s probably worth the effort.

Comodo is excellent once you configure it appropriately, but it has some insane default settings. The main one I hate is Defense+ (which tries to automatically create rules for programs you use, kind of defeating the whole purpose of a firewall).

I also disable HIPS as I found it too intrusive. It's supposed to protect system files and the registry from modification without your consent.

It depends on how you want to use the firewall, but I set it up so that I get a prompt when a new program tries to get either an inbound or an outbound connection, regardless of ports and protocols. That gives me the application-level protection I want, without bombarding me with multiple prompts.

Do I need to disable Defense+ then, and if so how?

HIPS was already disabled, so I have just left it.

Everything is just double-dutch to me I am afraid and even if I had the time to go through all the info, it would still be double-dutch :(

I find it more reassuring to click on Firefox or IE on it, and it being sandboxed - just hope it is set up right.
