PPI claim for aunt with dementia

Hello
My aunt has had dementia for several years. In recent months myself and my siblings have taken control over her financial affairs. Power of attorney has been signed over to my brother and my aunt has recently been placed in a care home. Its recently come to light that my aunt has been paying PPI on a barclaycard which hasn't been used for several years. My mother has asked me to look into whether she is entitled to a refund on payments from the time she became sick and therefore unable to use the card.

Normally, PPI is only paid when there is an outstanding balance not repaid in that month. If the balance is repaid in full, you would not expect to see it deducted. My mother has asked me to look into whether she is entitled to a refund on payments from the time she became sick and therefore unable to use the card.
For all the things banks do wrong, they do tend to be pretty good once they are aware the account holder suffers a mental illness. So, there is no harm asking. However, do be aware that it is largely a goodwill gesture that you are after here. So, you want the clerk on your side. Don't go in all guns blazing making silly demands. Keep it professional and reasoned. Maybe mention the date her employment ended as employment is very important when it comes to PPI.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). PPI may have been paid on the account when it was in use in the past but you do not get charged PPI on a CC if you do not use it as it's only charged on an outstanding balance
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
