If you haven't got a spare grand when moving house I would be quite concerned about your finances in general.

Its not about having the spare money. Don't know about you but never too keen on paying bills I don't think I should get!

It's not free! I'm guessing you paid a mortgage arrangement fee? Guess what that pays - the brokers fees. Do it yourself and you'll find deals without arrangement fees.

Yes I'm aware they get paid. I used a broker because we were using Help to Buy so was much easier. Or so I thought...........
  • It's not an extra bill. It's not a tax. It's an extra piece of equity. You're never going to loose that £1000.

An extra grand to pay as part of a house purchase is not a massive thing. I know finances get 'down to the wire' but it's a life lesson : Never trust someone else to look after your finances.

Right, so if you've got the cash then send it to your solicitor so you don't fail to complete on time. This isn't an "extra bill", it's money you were meant to be paying anyway, whether from your own resources or the mortgage. By all means complain about the poor service, but nobody has cost you £1000.

No I understand that, but its an initial outlay of £1000 I wasn't expecting to have to make. I kind of thought I'd be paying it over 25 years.

And yes yes, I know I should have tonnes of cash lying around cos I'm buying a house but, I'm still annoyed about it.

Just spoke to the broker. I had been told initially there was a shortfall on the mortgage of £895 but when the full application came back, they said we had to pay £200 towards the fees still but failed to mention this was on top of the shortfall!! Hence the £1k. Very poor communication from the broker but sod all I can do about it now.

Lesson for future readers, ensure you read all paperwork before you agree/sign.

Never trust anyone else other than yourself and if you screw up, then you have no one else to blame.

Very true. Get everything in writing too and not just phone conversations!!
  • Since the mortgage is all agreed, can you whack it on a credit card, then open up a 0% card account, move it across and then gradually pay it off for the next 2 or 3 years? It might make it a little less painful.

Where did you think that the £895 had gone?
