So I'm not sure what possessed me (other than 6 months of sleep deprivation with a baby who hates sleeping!) but I took a soft scouring sponge (cheapy yellow with green rough side) to our lovely black reclining sofa.
Usually I just use a damp cloth or the cleaning wipes that came with it, but it was looking especially grubby (new baby also likes to sick everywhere) and so for some stupid reason I thought I'd have a go at getting the worst of the stains off with soapy water and the sponge.
It's now dried and has patchy white streaks and is really dull
I have used a few of the conditioning wipes that were also in the kit (working in small circular motions) and although the worst of the patchy white streaks have gone, the dullness is still there
I could seriously cry and really don't feel like fessing up to the hubby who took the baby out so I could clean.
Any long-term suggestions to restore the shine?
We took out added insurance on it (we also have dogs) but I don't think that taking a scouring pad to it is going to be covered.
Really, really cross with myself!

Don't panic......leather is very forgiving. :rotfl: as long as it's not torn.
(I wouldn't allow children with buckles on their shoes on the sofa)
You can buy special leather restorer to bring back the colour and shine. . Look on eBay or Amazon.0 -

Yes i agree, it just needs a bit of tender loving care with the right products. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thank you both! I've buffed it with a microfibre cloth and it is looking a little better and I've calmed down a bit too
I shall have a look online for the restorer
The fear of sharp doggy nails ripping the beautiful leather was actually the reason we took out extra insurance as we were assured that if the worst was to happen they would come and repair, not that I'd hold my breath that DFS would find some way to wriggle out of it2024 Challenges

I've not tried this (apart from on saddles & bridles), but would saddle soap be any good? It certainly can't damage it and may restore some shine. It works well on saddles, rub it in well and then buff with a clean soft cloth.0

We have the DFS thing and claimed when my niece managed to cut a chunk out of the sofa in minutes when our back was turned, she only had those plastic children's scissors!
Anyway they came out and checked the damage and then sent a leather repair person round to recover the cushion with no quibbles at all.0 -
Simple cloth with plain water. Have used it on our leather for years. Where it is seriously discoloured, just use sparingly, a black liquid boot polish on a dry wipe or kitchen towel. Test before use!
For the brat, try a tot of whiskey. You could put some on the babes dummy as well!0 -
Nothing to worry.
There are load of leather restorer.
I use same thing for my car seats, i use CarPlan leather spray.
Asda, halfords, tesco they all sells them.0 -
The wipes are not as good as a good dose of saddle soap, or similar leather conditioner.
Leather is very forgiving - also, a bit like a wooden table, the first scuffs look awful, by the 3rd or 4th, it all looks full of character.
Just wipe the sick off with a damp cloth (this is when leather is better than fabric, that retains the sicky smell!)
Baby will settle down soon, sickyness and sleep tending to get better after 6 months and starting on solid food.0 -
You've all been so helpful! Thank you2024 Challenges

Don't panic. I bought my sofa from DFS and they did come and fix it. A small, sweaty boy spent last summer sitting in one place mostly in his shorts. Light patches appeared on the dark brown leather and they looked awful so I rang the shop - the sofa was 18 months old at this point.
They told me someone would come and have a look at it for me. When the man came I thought he was going to say it would have to be sent away or something equally drastic, but he got a repair kit out of his car, mixed the required colour and resprayed my sofa. I had to leave it to dry for 24 hours but it's perfect (and the small sweaty one now has to sit on a blanket if he is wearing shorts).
Just tell them that the baby puked....you don't need to tell them how you were trying to clean it. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes, my sofa looks like new and I was expecting the worst as you hear things about DFS.....but honestly they were great.0
