Share Purchase

Options
Hi

Im considering starting to buy a few share, small amounts, maybe only £10-£20 when my budget allows.

Can anyone suggest a good site to us to buy in this manner?

Thanks

See this thread, in which it's explained how such very small purchases aren't a sensible idea for a variety of reasons, including the fact that dealing fees of £5-10 per transaction would wipe out any realistic chance of making any money and that buying individual company shares is a highly risky strategy for any investor but especially an inexperienced one....

What are you hoping to achieve?
  • Just trying to build up a small portfolio but dont want to commit large amounts at present. I know if I put small amounts in a savings account the returns wont be great and i'll be too likely to withdraw it.
  • This looks like it may be of interest? I have no connection

Fees are not too bad - £12 + 0.45% of investment value per year, with no separate dealing charges.

Investment choices look reasonable - Vanguard based

FCA regulated. Looks like an interesting idea to me, but it would be good to know what those with more expertise think.

You'd be much better off drip feeding small monthly amounts into a global multi asset fund such as Vanguard LifeStrategy.

    ^What George said.

For small amounts forget individual stocks, go for funds or even stay in cash.

Some investment trust savings schemes allow contributions as low as £10 or £20 per month. See the linked article and scroll down to the table. Note that the article is dated 2015; some of the costs may have changed..

Save up about £2,000 then you can split it across 4 shares putting £500 in each. Not worth bothering with anything less due to the costs and risk. If you just want exposure to the market in general then invest in a fund.
