Carers Allowance

Hi

Just wanted to check i understood a few things correctly...

Is the carers allowance £45.10 now?

I read you can earn up to £82 p.w. and still claim CA - is £82 the most up-to-date figure you can earn - or is it lasts years allowance amount?

Is the figure £82 before tax or after tax?

Does the person who claims it, have to be a close relative?

It's £45.70 according to this years figures on this site, but I'm afraid i couldn't tell you what the wage allowance is, although that does sound about right.

As far as I know, you don't have to be related to the person, but I think you have to be putting in something like 35 hours a week of care for them.

You wouldn't pay tax on earnings of £82 and that figure may also be below the NI threshold too.

There's more info about carer's allowance here :)

WOW curry_queen - up so late!

Thanks for the info. I understand that the person has to care for 35 hours, i just wondered if they have to be related or whether a non-relative could claim it. As on the forms i have it asks you what your relationship is to the person, I (perhaps wrongly) assumed thenthat the question meant that you had to be related. I hope that makes sense.

Yeah, I know what you mean and I wasn't 100% certain myself till I checked it out, but it can be paid for caring for a relative, friend or neighbour as long as they receive the qualifying benefits.

Your earnings are calculated after tax/NI too and stuff like childcare and pensions etc can be deducted from it too. There's more about it on the second link I posted ;)
