What is my internal wall made out of?

Hi,

We have an non-load bearing internal wall between the toilet room and the bathroom. The house was built in the early 50s.

We are looking to remove this wall to open up the bathroom so we decided to drill a hole through to see what it is made of. And, I'm not sure.

Please can someone advise what this internal wall is made from? Thank you.

Solid breeze block. Prepare for a messy job, the dust gets everywhere!

Uh, fantastic. Thank you for the input.

Any recommendations for getting this out? I've read a grinder might be the quickest, but is by far the messiest approach.

Grinder will cover the whole house in dust etc get a sledge hammer and HIT it! Use safety gear goggles gloves etc.

If you knock the plaster off to expose a mortar line and drill around 1 block to remove it the rest should come out reasonably whole using a lump hammer and bolster. I tend to find a combination of breaking the bond between blocks and then hitting the faces works quite well
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
  • I second the suggestion of taking a sledgehammer to it - I was amazed at how quickly a little 'un like me could smack down a wall.

Oh, and as it's an internal wall do remember to keep a camera handy for comedy shots like I did :D

How do you know it isnt load bearing?
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

If the roof doesn't cave in, it wasn't load bearing! :D
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

We had a similar seperate toilet/bathroom arrangement and found it quite convenient as you could use the toilet when someone was in the bath.

That too was built with cinderblocks, a very coarse poor-quality type of breezeblock that wouldn't ever be used for load-bearing walls.
