Nexus 7 (2012) headphone socket not working

I have a Nexus 7 (2012) 16gb tablet, which had Lollipop 5.0.1 on it and it was running really slow. I found instructions on the web, and took it back to Kitkat 4.4.4 and did a reset also. Running well now, but I can't get my headphone socket to work. To be honest I don't use it much with headphones so it may not be a new problem. I've checked Google, and tried a few of the solutions offered with no effect. I'm a bit worried about opening it up and using electrical tape over the socket, is there any other solution anyone can suggest before I resort to that? Help really appreciated. Thanks, Fpcat

Headphone socket is almost certainly nothing to do with the Android OS version.

A Nexus 7 2012 will have very little residual value these days.

I hadn't thought of bluetooth, good idea, and saves fiddling. The Nexus may be old, but it suits me, and will do until I can afford something else more up to date. Thanks for the help.

Certainly nothing to do with OS version as bod1467 says - there may be some sound settings to look at but unless you've fiddled with them, sound should come out of the speaker, and switch to headphone, when a headphone is plugged in. SO, how does that work? There's a tiny springy bit of metal in the headphone socket - when you put a headphone plug in, it gets squeezed out and activates a switch. This springy bit may be stuck or there may just be some rubbish in there. Have a look in with a torch, blow some compressed air in there, and/or poke around in there CAREFULLY with a straightened paperclip or similar.

If the jack is physically faulty its reasonably easy (with good eyes and some basic tools) to replace it

    Plenty of other sellers too.

I did one a while back, didn't take many minutes, just be careful with the connectors.

I replaced it using this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAeJF_GRylI

The part was just over £2 from China. I did have to wait a couple of weeks for it though. How they can sell them for £2 beats me.The postage alone would cost that if you had to send it from here.
