Gas Fire Removal

Hi,
We're currently preparing to sell our 1st floor flat - unfortunately we had a local heating company round to certify our gas appliances, and they condemned the old outset fire in the Living room, and capped off the gas to it. I've since removed the fire and taken it to the tip - leaving a hole covered by a taped on metal sheet.
We've now bought a free standing electric fire to replace the old gas fire, my original plan was just to get a new laminate fireplace back to cover the chimney hole, and stick this electric fire in front of it. However the old capped off gas fire pipe is still sticking out of the wall and in the way - the heating company was supposed to come and have a look at it today but never turned up - I'm not convinced they'll be able to do much with it anyway, it's a concrete floor and the gas pipe comes up from behind the Skirting board so rather than messing about chasing them I'm thinking of just sticking some boxing around the old gas pipe to cover it up and then putting the new electric fire on top of the boxing.
Problem is my wife's read something somewhere and is now panicking about this plan - she reckons the opening for the old chimney breast has to be bricked up, and we can't just leave the capped off pipe there.
Can anyone confirm if my plan is Ok, or do I have to do more than this.
Thanks

I had the same and just plugged an electric fire in, left the capped pipe. Had a gas check done a couple of months later and nothing was said.
You see loads of old open fireplaces either with flowers etc as a feature or electric etc fires in (Big Homes under the Hammer fan here)0 -
Pics, you will have to put them on a hosting site & post the links here without the www bitI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
you don't have to brick it up, next owner may want a new gas fire. If they have certified it safe its fine. We never leave a gas fire in a rented property, they need servicing and make gas cert more complicated.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0
