I moved into a house at the start of this year and I have never received a bill for my gas & electric in this time, yet I have been submitting meter readings. I pay each month via direct debit and decided to find out why I haven't received a bill yet. It turns out I have a prepayment meter yet NPower have allowed me to pay via direct debit for this entire time and in the numerous times I have asked why they aren't billing me haven't picked up on this. There was a British Gas smart meter when I moved in but I don't use that anymore.

I'm currently trying to get this sorted now but I'm worried as where this leaves me, could I end up with a massive bill? I am still on a fixed tariff that I had at my previous address which was a credit meter.

You say there was a BG smart meter but you don't use it any longer.

When you moved in, did you tell BG that you were now responsible for the energy bills BEFORE moving to Npower?

I believe that the BG smart meters become dumb when you switch to another supplier (with the exception of a switch to Sainsburys energy).

Something does not sound right - a prepayment meter but you pay by DD - do the DD payments automatically appear on the meter, or is the meter not really a prepay?

It looks like a prepay meter, it has everything a prepay meter would have, NPower set me up as if I was on a credit meter my welcome letter says this. Their records however show a prepay meter. I did tell BG and paid their bill for the short period inbetween changing to Npower when moving in. I agree things don't seem right, I can't go 8 months without loading up a prepay meter. Can a prepay meter be converted to work as a credit meter?

If you have a prepayment meter you would need to top it up ever week or you would have no gas/electric, are you do this? If not it is probably a credit meter.
Smart meters can operate as credit or ppm but they are recorded as credit on industry systems.

OP in your original post you say "I am still on a fixed tariff that I had at my previous address which was a credit meter."

What ever your supply arrangements were at your previous address have no relationship to your new address. You will have submitted final readings and received a final bill for your old address.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
