Moving to Australia - Investing in the UK

Hello,
We are moving to Australia and we are selling our house in the UK and we would like to leave the money from the sale in the UK. This might only be for a short (12 months) term or maybe longer...
We would be looking to invest something like £50k. What would be the best way to get the best return on this (I thought of using an offshore account but have no idea if this makes good sense or not...)
Any suggestions / help would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Tim
