Pet insurance

I was denied insurance when my dog had his first epileptic fit in the first 14 days of a new policy (with the same company) - has anyone ever challenged this as how could I have predicted this - it's like saying they won't cover you to have a road accident in the first 2 weeks of your car insurance - none of us would stand for that

This is why if you only use a yearly policy you should renew early to avoid the period in which you are essentially uninsured.

Surely it you didn't like the 14 day exclusion you would have renewed early or taken a for life policy.

The yearly policies are cheaper than lifetime cover and this is one of the main reasons why. Same as a lot of things in life you get what you pay for. You chose the cheaper option which doesn't offer the same level of cover as the more expensive option.

You say about car insurance, it would be similar to only taking out fire, theft and third party insurance then expecting a claim for fully comp.

I assume you had a policy, thought the renewal premium was high and you could get it cheaper by taking out a new policy.

If you swop policies you should start the new one 14 days before the old finishes so you are fully covered. Of course, if something happened in these 14 days the new policy would not cover it so you would have to claim on the old policy and then continue with it and cancel the new one.

While you could not have predicted the fit it is now a condition which is ore existing to the start of your cover for illness.

New policies have an introductory bonus to tempt you in hence they are cheaper.

The exclusion period is normal in all policies, although some have differing lengths for the exclusion. This is to avoid someone seeing or suspecting their dog is ill and taking out insurance so that they can claim.

Insurance is a business and they are entitled to set their own conditions for accepting your custom.
