Ebay - underpaid postage!

I'm in a bit of a quandary….a small ebay parcel (pretty flower bra straps wrapped round a card) should have cost me 99p plus 74p postage but actually cost me £1.50 more to get from the post office as the seller had underpaid the postage. ( I sent her the photos attached to the package to show her) The seller has apologised (see below) I replied & said that I thought that it was up to her to pay the postage as it was her mistake & was too thick for a normal 1st class stamp - I don’t know how she has got away without this happening before as it was obviously too fat for a 1st class stamp! I haven’t heard a word form her since last week & I know its not much but I feel a bit miffed by it! Am I being silly & should I just let it go for such a small amount? She hasn’t left me feed back yet - I have feedback 100% on 800 + transactions & am worried she will give me bad feedback if I give her negative! What would you do?

Hi
So sorry to hear this but I have sent several others in exactly the same way without a problem.
I can only deduce it must have been a problem with your postman. I also find £1.50 an excessive charge for the postage. I will as a gesture refund 50%

Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!

Sellers haven't been able to leave anything other than a positive for years now, so I wouldn't worry about that.

It is the sellers responsibility to get the item to you and if there is a problem with the packaging they need to take that up with Royal Mail, not you. I would be very offended to only be offered 50% of my out of pocket expenses .

For something this small, I would have been tempted to let the postal service return to sender, you don't have to pay the extra and get your item. I would expect a full reimbursement for her mistake as it was not your error.

Many eBayers will find £1.50 an excessive charge but this is the new system, rather than £1 + whatever was missing.

Item is obviously too thick for the stamp but she can apparently (read on here) challenge with a photo of the package if you supply one. I would politely ask that she refunds it all and then claim it back from RM due to their "error" - obviously leaving out the fact that you know she won't get anything. You don't have a contract with them so they won't deal with you.

If that doesn't work then I'd not hesitate to neg; she doesn't want to accept the mistake so won't learn otherwise not to put other buyers in the position.

Am anticipating an underpaid one myself - item that I anticipate is a small parcel was marked as shipped on Sunday (ordered on Sunday so they can't have been late updating.)
  • She's trying to blame the postie because she's got away with it before? Perhaps you could politely refer her to this page http://postageestimator.ebay.co.uk/ or Royal Mail's postage prices page, which will tell her that if it's more than 5mm thick it's a Large Letter and charged accordingly. I can't imagine bra straps ever fitting through the standard Letter slot, even with minimal packaging, so if they've been delivered before with only a normal letter stamp she's been lucky. The difference between a regular 1st class stamp and a Large Letter 2nd class is only 11p, so she's not even saving much (though it may be a matter of convenience since a lot of shops sell regular but not Large Letter postage stamps). I'd continue asking for a full refund and suggest she takes up the issue with Royal Mail if she's displeased with their charges.

Is she offering 50% of your order price or 50% of the underpayment?

As others have said, she should be paying the full underpayment charge.

Quite frankly, the seller is having a laugh?

Thanks everyone. I sent her a message last night saying it's up to her to sort it out with the post office & I'd like a full refund please - I got it this morning! Great advice from everyone on here thank you, much appreciated :-)
