Car insurance non fault claim

somebody rear ended my car bout a month back.
I originally rang my insurer to make a claim.
But was contacted by the third party insurer the same day who wanted to fix my car.
so i canceled my claim with my insurance company within 24 hours.
My car was fixed by third party insurer at a repair centre of my choice.
However my insurance company have now logged a non fault claim against me and this shows on my online insurance portal.
They said that because i claimed from the third party that it was still classed as a non fault claim, as i made a claim from the third party.
How can this be right when the third party insurer phoned me and offered to repair my car.
My insurer is adamant that they are right.
My fear now is that my premium will rise come renewal time because of this.
any advice would be appreciated.

You have to report any accident to your car, regardless if you want to claim off your own or 3rd party insurance. If you don't you run the risk of a cancelled insurance.

Some insurers still penalise you for non fault claims, elephant/admiral being one of them.

Other's don't penalise you, so use a comparison website to get the best deal for you.

  • I fully understand that you should notify your inusurer.
but i didn't make a claim. my car was offered to be repaired by the thiry party insureer.
i canceled the claim with my insurer and advised them to change it
    to a notification.
yet they think that I made a claim and logged it against my policy when my
insurer have had no expense what so ever or even done anything for that matter.
im confused as to how they can log a non fault claim against me and my policy because of this.

A non fault claim won't affect your ncb but may may a difference to your premium.
  • im not getting an answer here lol. i understand the consequences of a non fault claim.

They have to log it, you told them about an accident, it's now in your record, just like you have to tell them anyways Whether it's your fault or not. Insurers uses this record to base your premiums regardless of blame. Obvious fault accidents you pay more.

I am sure you understand non fault claims means claiming for 3rd party. Hence it will be recorded as such.

Again go shop around for your insurance.

  • log it yes. but to log a non fault claim is wrong in my opinion in my circumstances.
A notification and non fault claim are 2 different things.
my insurance is vaild until next feb so i have plenty of time to fight it

Not with insurers, to base your premiums, they have to know were you at fault or not. Which is common sense really, the more at fault claims you have, the more you should pay.

However they also have to know your non fault claims as well. For example if you keep parking in a dodgy area and keep getting non fault claims, they will keep increasing your premiums because of your history.

I had a no fault in the car for which I was second driver, but the insurance on which I'm first driver needed renewal a couple of weeks ago. (The claim was dealt with by the third party insurer who rang us admitting their client was at fault).

They added £8 onto the original quote (initially it was 25% until my husband hesitated) and we agreed to it as the quote was still very good.

I had a non fault claim with elephant and they jacked up my premiums by 200 pounds, went elsewhere where they didn't penalise other's who aren't at fault.
