Student Loans Company errors

Hi all

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

I am due to pay my student loan off within the next 18 months or so. A few months ago I called the Student Loans Company to enquire about moving on to a direct debit repayment and while I was on the phone I asked to confirm my repayment records. I don't have all my payslips but I have kept track of how much I have been earning at any given time since graduation, so using tax calculator websites I can work out how much should have been deducted from my salary each month and compare it against the SLC records.

It turns out they have no record of about £560 worth of repayments. Thankfully this corresponds to the first few months in my current job, so I still have access to all my payslips from that time and can prove what was repaid - as soon as I can find the time to get all my evidence together and send it off to them.

However, it seems as though this is not an isolated problem. Nearly everyone I know who has actually checked has found errors in their repayment record, so I am telling all my friends to call the SLC and check.

Has anyone else here had this experience?

If you're still studying and haven't started repaying your loan yet, make sure you keep all your pay slips, because you can't rely on HMRC or the SLC to get it right.

    I had this problem.

This year I used the Student Loans Company Website's balance calculator and I noticed that it allowed me the option to input contributions for 2013-2014 tax year as well as this year's contributions to calculate my potential balance. I found this strange and so contacted SLC.

They told me that they had been told by HMRC that I made 0 contribution for 13-14 tax year. This was a year my employer changed due to a take over.

It was only because I kept my P60's that I was able to claim these contributions. I sent the 13-14 P60 off and the SLC re-calculated the interest etc. and sent me a new statement up to April 2016.

The moral of the story is as littlegreenfrog suggests..... keep records of your payslips and P60's for longer than you might think. Do not rely on SLC and HMRC to get it right first time.

P.S It seems I have the same problem arising for 2015-2016 contributions as I've changed jobs half way through the tax year and my SLC statement does not include my contributions made during my time with the previous employer!!
You should pay attention to the needs of the moment - otherwise there is no future. But to ignore the future is foolish - living solely for the moment leaves nothing for when the next moment arrives.
