Ask about Fischer on the Energy Forum and they will tell you the same as me, which is that it'll be no better than an oil filled radiator at a fraction of the cost. All electric heaters are 100% efficient and you can't get more out of them than you put in!

But don't take my word for it:

  • Thank you! This is why I posted on here. Googling just brings up endless company websites and biased comparison sites, at least here I know I'll get opinions based on facts and not profit margins!
  • On that note; if we could arrange the room so she could fit a radiator in (it's still an issue, even with me looking into Fischers etc) would she be better off with the central heating or a storage heater? I know she could get a thermostatically controlled radiator so she needn't be losing heat when she's not using the room overnight.
  • I don't think you can have a radiator in a conservatory directly connected to the house central heating. Someone more familiar with building regs will doubtless be along to either confirm, or tell me I'm wrong!

I agree with with onomatopoe..., conservatory heating has to be stand-alone, can't be centralised.

Please refer to page of the following document where it says "The dwelling’s heating system must not be extended into the conservatory or porch."

  • Righto, that's fine. I'll keep looking at the other options then. The main issue for her will be running cost as she's a pensioner so I'm trying to narrow the best heating option from that POV. Initial outlay is less of a concern as long as it's not ridiculous, she's got money set aside for that with expecting to replace the whole roof originally but I don't want her to end up with a system that's going to cost a fortune to run. Some cost, of course, there always will be but not insane - she left one of her convector heaters on all day once and it took a fair chomp (2kw thing). That was without thermostat or timer though as she'd managed to switch both off so of course, anything with a thermostat and possibly timer on will help and a permanent installation is less likely to be accidentally switched off by her (the convector was in the middle of the room so she'd caught it).

Hi nikirushka, just nosing through your thread for info as we are considering replacing conservatory roof and just wanted to share re heating - we looked into Fischer and they were sooo expensive. In the end we purchased a slimline electric radiator from Best Electric Radiators (there are other companies that do similar) and they seem pretty good so far, for a fraction of the cost (starting at £200 ish). Not sure about consumption as we have only lived here 6 months and installed rads about 4 months ago but they are fully programmable for different days/times etc and heat the rooms - including conservatory - really effectively.
