My 18 yr old daughter took her A levels in June and has now signed on for universal credit while she looks for a job but she doesn't get paid until 11/8.

She has severe asthma and needs prescriptions and I am really not sure if she should be paying for them now or not.....the child benefit officially finishes at the end of August so does this mean she is classed as being in full time education until then?....or should we be paying for the nhs prescriptions?

I am worried we are going to be in trouble and the chemist says they really don't have a clue .
Thank you f or any replies

Thank you but I had already read this..... But surely universal credit doesn't give her free prescriptions when she still lives at home with her parents? I wish I could find a telephone number to ring to speak to someone to clarify this as job centre are hopeless

Could you ring one of the numbers on the left hand side of the link?

I don't know which one would be the most appropriate, but they could always point you in the right direction.

I hope you get it sorted x

f you are unsure whether you are entitled to help with health costs, for example because you are waiting for your Universal Credit claim to be decided or to receive an award notice, you should pay the relevant charge and ask for a refund form at the same time. For prescription charges, you will not be able to get the refund form (FP57) at a later stage.
Once you have received your UC award notice and can prove your entitlement to help with health costs, you may claim a refund.

Thank you. I rang and he said free prescriptions were up to the last day of school term but she is covered by universal credit from first day she signed on. When she gets hers first payment at the end of week she needs to take the paperwork into the chemist as proof of this.

He said 'As regards to the prescription she has already had for free, there is nothing we can do about this ....if this is picked up then as long as we can prove that she was on universal credit then we won't have to pay the penalty'

You can get a prepayment certificate for a year, for just over £100.

So she only has to have one prescription a month and it pays for itself.

That said, I don't think people (children) have to start paying for prescriptions until they're 19. I could be wrong though. Check with another pharmacy; maybe BOOTS:- they'll probably know. :)

Its 19th birthday if still in education, already checked for my 2.
You do get free prescriptions if on uc.
With jsa you couldnt claim if your child benefit was still in payment, so i would double check if this is the same for uc.
