Thanks for that gentle nudge, Hoploz.

As you rightly figured out, I have some money to spare and I would like to invest on the house, but I am not entirely sure how to go about it at the moment - still exploring :-)

Furts - I read an old post about light weight tiled roofs instead of glass or poly-carbonate roof for a conservatory.

Since it is a very old post, I wonder if things have progressed any further? I received 2 quotes today for a 3m x 4m conservatory - one with tiled roof and other polycarbonate roof. The difference is about £3500 (£12,000 vs £15,500) - do you think it's worth it?

We would like to install a conservatory (not for the reasons mentioned before) and your views on this matter would really help. Many thanks.

At a quick scim through my views remain. Since then there are many more roofs around and they increasingly worry me with how the market is progressing. Increasingly they are becomoing a folly.

A neighbour has just had a Guardian style roof. It has plunged his conservatory and lounge into relative darkness, So the solution was then to get Velux installed into the Guardian to restore some of the lost light. Of course this has added considerable weight to the so called lightweight roof. The mind boggles here at the design, the structural integrity and the cost. If the ceiling were flat it would look like a room but it follows the Guardian, with a !!!!!! plastering detail where they have tried to create a curved blending ceiling. It has a taken a weeks work on plastering remedials, filling and decorating to sort out this mess. However the skew wiff and part dangling LED downlights are still defective - I do not think there is space behind the ceiling to fix them properly.

The bottom line is countless Guardian roofs are a disaster area from light levels, to membranes, to ventilation, to Buildings Regulations to all round bad practice. Some of course will be OK!

If I were you I would be seeking a glass roof - only fools go for obsolete polycarbonate and I wonder why you have been offered this.

To add to all this countless bad designs and innappropriate materials are added to all round cowboy construction - like polycarbonate roofs that you are being offered!.

I know some are likely to shoot me down for my views but ponder over matters here. Most conservatories are a heap of dross. With careful design, careful manufacture and careful installation they can be a joy. I love them when they are good and this is a genuine heart felt verdict. But you have to pick your conservatory company with great care to achieve this outcome.
