Keeping DOG in a DOG HOUSE in the Garden?

hi guys,

Please help me with this one.

I want to keep a dog as a gaurd dog in my house, but i dont want to keep it inside the house, i want to keep it in the dog-house which i will place in my garden.

Now, can anyone please tell me what does the law says about keeping a dog in a dog-house, and if yes; then can i keep puppy in a dog-house?

I have looked at https://www.rspca.org.uk website but couldn't find any answer.

I don't think there is any law against it ,however there is against upsetting your neighbours with excessive noise and a puppy is going to take some getting used to being left outside, also as you are having it as a guard-dog it will need to be tied up when left alone outside and properly trained of course

    "Guard Dogs Act 1975

It is an offence to use or permit the use of a guard dog on any premises unless the handler, who is capable of controlling the dog, is present on the premises and the dog is under their control . The dog must be secured so that it is not at liberty to go about the premises. A warning that a guard dog is present must clearly be exhibited at each entrance to the premises. "

IMO your far better off getting a pet,who by it's very nature will protect your house /family from inside the home and won't upset the neighbours:D

You need a secure run as well as the dog house. Your dog needs to be "under control" at all times. When you are not around, this means that he must not be free to roam around.

Here's a basic guide to the various laws about keeping dogs, including guard dogs.

The house & run needs to be big enough to accommodate the dog when fully grown. So if you're planning on a German Shepherd or Rottweiler then think BIG.

If you put dog run into Google you get plenty of hits like THIS.

Finally - have you raised, kept & trained a Guard Dog before? If not, then please, please, please get professional help in training the poor dog. If he's not trained correctly, he could end up being destroyed for being dangerous & out of control. A Guard Dog obeys his master and only "guards" in specifc circumstances. He doesn't simply growl, bark and/or attack anything and anyone.

    Good luck

p.s. Working dogs are my "thing" :)

Well if I saw a neighbour with a puppy left outside day and night then I would not be happy at all!

Being a dog lover remember a dog needs to be well looked after and as Debt-Free-Chick has said "get some professional help in training the poor dog". Why not get a burglar alarm? Would you like to be stuck out in the garden 24/7, 365 days of the year?

Sorry if I sound like a goody - goody, but....

Your dog should be in the house, as part of the family - not locked/kept outside alone.Or even with another dog.

    It'd be like prison!

& not much use as a 'guard dog', if he's only guarding his kennel!!

    Plerase re-think your plans.

i have to disagree... i lived abroad years ago in reaaaaaaaaaally hot climate and my parents brought our 'outside dog' back. he refused to live indoors and so my dad had to build him an insulated, padded kennel with his own porch and food area!! it came in useful in the winter - i couldn't imagine any dog having to sleep in a non-insulated kennel in the snow etc. he was still a huge part of the family and came indoors occasionally to see what all the fuss was about - then sat at the back door til someone let him out :) he loved it and was happy - it was nothing like a prison and he was doing what he thought was his 'job' - guarding us.

No you must keep it inside as a family dog especially if you have kids..you may find that a family dog is more loyal too :) and you can't really keep a dog outside in the winter now can you, unless you have an out building which is heated for the dog..

Police dogs are kept outside their handlers home. They have a dog house specially built for them in their gardens. Two reasons, one to stop it getting over familiar with the family (i.e. going soft) and two they need to develop their winter coats to keep them warm when working in freezing temperatures.

But its not a police dog is it!

Its just mean to keep a dog outside like that, especially a puppy.

If you lived next door to me i would report it to the RSPCA everyday until the dog got removed and rehomed somewhere that would want it as another family member not just a growling machine.

Before we got our two little dogs we had a Rottweiller. He lived for 16 years - so grew to a ripe old age. He lived outside and he was a big part of our family. We would only bring him into the laundry in storms as he hated thunder. Although we are in Aust so our climates are a lot different. You would have to have a warm kennel. If you train him well he shouldn't be a bother to your neighbours. I think our dog would have hated inside, loved romping around the yard & never was vicious to anyone. Just looked the part. If you do keep him outside, do you have a large yard? or be prepared to walk him for a few hours each day. Our newest two are inside dogs & would probably die if I locked them out at night. :D
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)
