Soundbars limited by TV size??

Just a brief question - I was having a little browse at soundbars since i'll probably end up getting one.

I've been advised against cheapest of the cheap but i don't want to pay top level money either.

I noticed one Soundbar recently, a Bose one, which said "suitable up to 32" TVs".

Now i understand that if you have a big TV, say 55" then it'd LOOK better having a soundbar run the length of the TV

but is that right? Soundbars can get capped depending on TV size?

On a side note, with the budget i was setting aside, i was looking at the Bose Solo 5. Seemed to get decent enough reviews & i was happy with the price i saw it going for.

I'd be looking at a 50"-55" TV myself.

I guess it'll help with stereo separation, and look better to have the right size, but there's nothing inherent, electronically :)
  • That's good to know.

I know a long bar will look better on a 50-55 TV than what a short bar will, but if it ends up costing more, performing less etc then i'd rather the shorter bar to be honest. I guess i'd need to look in to it some more.

If you're standing the telly on the soundbar, the soundbar has to be able to take the weight and be stable so the whole lot doesn't topple over.

If your telly is otherwise adequately supported then use whatever soundbar you want. Or get a proper amp and speaker system which will probably cost less and sound a lot better.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • If i've read right then those are sound bases?

Our TV will be going on a decent sized TV stand.

I don't understand a great deal about this & even less about surround sound. That's why i was opting for the soundbar. Less cabling too i guess.,

You won't get "surround sound" with even a top of the range soundbar . Soundbars are definitely an improvement over a Flatscreen TV's inbuilt speakers, but only five speakers and a subwoofer arranged at various locations around the viewing area will give proper 5.1 surround sound.

The reason the Bose model you mention is only suitable for TVs up to 32" is that the TV actually stands on top of it. If you want a bigger TV then choose a different soundbar or soundbase , preferably one which stands alone.

Oh yeah, sound bars are basically just speakers, just in one package instead of separate. Separate is almost certainly going to give you better results, just mean more cables and look less pretty and be a lot less convenient. That said, the sound bar will do a perfectly decent job and for the convenience it's a sensible option. Some people get quite forthright about home entertainment systems, some just want to watch a bit of telly, and different needs need different solutions.
  • It's just so that the soundbar isn't wider than the TV.

I've got this one, and it fits under my 42" TV nicely - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IG7BY8Q/
