O/S Daily Thread Sunday 7th August 2016

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

    Morning all

Hugs to Lainey & Csarina, I hope Mum and OH are on the mend.

The dogs have had their morning constitutional and hubby has a cuppa in bed, I haven't fed the fish yet as they are still asleep. Yesterday I cleared out one of hubby's cupboards and in the evening sorted out some paperwork. I filled a binbag with it and we will take it to work to be shredded next week.

Hubby painted all the doors and architrave upstairs again, he can't decide which shade of white he wants! Hopefully he will start on the walls today as they are what really need doing.

I shall carry on clearing out hubby's stuff and clear more paperwork this evening and once the dogs have gone home I'll put my sofa throws in the wash as they have been making nests with them.

    Have a good day everyone,
    Hugs Hester

    Morning everyone.

    Thanks for the thread HH.

The wind has been huffing and puffing all night, even had a couple of rolls of thunder. There's still a gale blowing now.

Yesterday was mostly dry and sunny. After my morning of washing and shopping I did some garden things. I've discovered an inlaid brick border in one part of the lawn so I'm clearing it of grass, very slowly as it"s difficult. I also pruned back a couple of invasive plants which were overwhelming other plants and sat looking at my enormous huge borage which has taken on triffid-like features. The flowers are so pretty and delicate with the stems so big and ugly.

I watched bits of the Olympics, especially the swimming, but couldn't stay awake. This reminds me of the Toyko games, I'd often find my Dad fast asleep in front of the telly in the morning, the second it was turned off he'd wake up insisting he was still watching.

Today I'll be cooking chicken thighs with chorizo and onion and use up some almost past their best tomatoes. I need to do some serious dusting and vacuuming of the guest bedroom as we have visitors arriving on Wednesday.

Right, perhaps another half an hour in bed reading and then I'll start my day.

I hope everyone has a good Sunday, especially the poorlies.

    Morning everyone

HH - thanks for starting us off, you'll be looking forward to going back to work for a rest! Slow down and get some r & r.

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Now light, but very overcast and cloudy, but still very warm.

DH and myself up and enjoying first cuppas, boys still in their pits.

Dinner last night was southern fried chicken, HM spare ribs, onion rings hot new potatoes, side salad and coleslaw - all eaten and enjoyed. lunch today is roast leg of lamb, roasties, mash, cauli/broc cheese, carrots, pan fried cabbage, peas, yorkshires and gravy - lamb is huge so there should be some LO's - if there is it'll become a dish that my mum always called "40 to 1" - meaning 40 bits of potato to 1 bit of meat - either when they couldn't afford much meat or she wanted to stretch LO's to make another meal - there's usually plenty of LO's as I've started prepping a bit extra so I have part of a meal already in the fridge for 1 night early in the week, this is helping loads whilst I'm working 3 full days a week. I'll get the pack ups etc prepped to, then I'll be chilling and taking it easy before going back to work tomorrow.

We got several jobs done yesterday - and the bed linen from the caravan taken off the bed, washed and line dried, so that's ready to go back to the caravan.

    Have peaceful Sundays' everyone x

    Keep safe and well x

  • Morning all, thank you Hester for starting us off. I would love to see photos when you have dressed your home for sale. I love watching programs on the TV about dressing homes for sale

Morning Gers, it is a little windy here this morning and quite overcast.

It was a lovely day yesterday, sunny and warm. We managed the front garden . Himself was out for 4 hours, so that is quite an achievement for him. He was tired in the afternoon but he was OK.

I won't go into details, but the property next door has been rented out (these were the ones whose dogs attacked Himself) Well they have abandoned the house, evidently owing months of rent and you might imagine the state of the garden. Himself was able to go round and cut a lot of the hedging back. The Landlord has cut the enormous privet hedge at the front. This was about 8ft high, so now that has gone he is having a skip delivered into the garden.

The LL took me round a little while ago, you wouldn't believe the mess they have left, it is going to cost him thousands to put it right.

Today nothing planned, but we might have a run out. Not enough washing to put the machine on for us but I know DGD wants to do her washing.

    Have a good day all

Morning all, am having a bit of peace and quiet before I start work.
    Dry here but cloudy.
My general feeling oh unwellness has turned into a streaming cold which is probably good news, rather than hanging about in a non specific sort of way.
Didn't achieve much yesterday ither than work and some hoovering but I did clean the oven after dinner.
Last night's dinner was cooked by OH, breaded chicken (I ate a little bit) lamb for OH and a DS, salad, crusty bread and hummus. Also, they had onion rings. Tonight I'll make a biriani and I have the chicken marinading or should that be marinating in spices, garlic and ginger. An easy meal. Except it does rely on a lot of coriander and mint leaves and those are outside so OH will have to crawl out of the sitting room window and get those for me. He WILL be pleased.
Hope that LaineyT and Deleted_User are doing ok with poorly persons, my DS is not managing his difficulties too well and I foresee another run in with the orthotics team at the hospital. Although I can understand his frustration I don't want him to p** them off too badly.
I might have my shower soon before OH gets up. I got up early as he'd sausage rolled himself up in the duvet and although it wasn't cold, I do like a bit of duvet to clutch.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

Do you remember a programme on television called the House Doctor, with a very bossy woman? She had a penchant for the twee.
I am so cross ehen I hear about tenants leaving things in a mess and owing rent. We are renting at present while househunting but had to scrub this place out as wash carpets as it was left very dirty and full of dog hair. The promised pfofessional cleaning had not materialised. And we were bombarded in the first couple of months by debt collectors who refused to believe that I was not this man. So I know now that it does happen but I would have been amazed before.

  • Thank you Hester I shall look forward to that.

AOD, I do remember that program. I knew the house wouldn't be in a good state, but for the life of me I can't understand why people choose to live like that, Just because they don't own the property it should be regarded as their home. Even the glass skylights over the bedroom doors(pre war houses) are shattered and the jagged glass left in. Why on earth would someone want to do that?

I have asked the LL for some nice neighbours next time:):)

  • Morning folks and thanks for starting off HESTER. We have the wind here too and cloud cover as well for good measure. It looks like we are not getting a repeat of yesterday's summer's day!

I don't feel as bogged down today as I ploughed through quite a number of jobs yesterday. The house got dusted & vacced top to bottom, bathroom and kitchen cleaned, the pile of ironing done and the bedding washed and ironed too. I even cleaned out the fridge!

Mr TA was toiling away as best he could in the back garden and, by the time I got out to help him, all the old fence panels had been broken up and strapped in bundles ready for a tip run. Once the patio had been swept up and all the pots watered and put back it was looking better than it has for days! We now need to decide what sort of new fence we want and make a decision on what to replace the slate chippings on the "top deck" with. They look such a mess covered in dead leaves, petals etc all the time. I want something I can sweep!

The much needed food shop (mainly fruit, veg and dairy) is getting done this morning. Odd bits of this and that left in the fridge so we survived with the help of freezer stuff to supplement meals.

This afternoon I want to defrost both freezers and take stock of what's out there. I'm going back to sticking a contents list on the outside as it saves rummaging or having a lucky dip.

No meals planned for today, it will be whatever we feel like at the time! Usually fish in my case and Mr TA's not a fussy sort, he will happily eat anything I put in front of him!

Have a good day whatever you are up to and (((HUGS))) where wanted. AOD descriptions of your DH climbing in and out of the window always amuses me! Hope all the poorlies are feeling better. Take care xx

  • Oh dear your horror stories of tenants and rented houses is worrying me! DS decided to rent his house out when he moved in with gf some four years ago. He's just had one tenant all that time and he left the house as he found it when he moved out a couple of months ago. He now has a new tenant and has his fingers crossed! x
