What does mot test number mean on gov.uk

Would anyone know what the mot test number means on https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
I've had my car mot'd at the same garage for a few years and each time the mot test number is different.

Exactly what it says, the serial number for the test. In the past it would have been pre printed on each certificate in the MOT book.
  • I was hoping it was the mot test centre number.

Np and there does not seem to be a direct correlation to site id's either with the short amount of research I have done with the published last centre details and my old cars mot history.

It's just a randomly generated number that becomes the certificates serial number. As a tester if I'm given the last 6 digits of the VIN, the registration number and make, I can look up the test number on the public site and use it (with the spaces removed) to obtain a duplicate certificate even though the car wasn't tested at our station. That way I can find out where the car was tested.

I'd imagine that the public site is the one that you gave in your OP, and that mrmot uses the information from there plus the VIN data to obtain the duplicate certificate from a restricted website, for which he can charge you £10.
