I've got a tablet running Windows 10.
I've had it idling, while it carries out a scan in Windows Defender.
I just went to shut it down, and I got the following two messages:-
I've previously seen:-
but I've never seen "Getting Windows ready" or "Working on updates"

Oh dear. Sounds like a real big issue....
What is the issue btw ?0 -

Could it be the 'Anniversary Update', which is basically a new version of Windows?0
-
OK, so I've done a Google search, and found a site that explains the Anniversary Update.
I've taken a look at my PC, using winver, and "OS Build" is different to the one shown on the site. Instead of ending .29 (as shown on the site), it ends .494
Does that mean I've received yet another major update?0 -
Is it 10586.494? If so, that was the *last* major update which came out in November 2015Bedsit_Bob wrote: »OK, so I've done a Google search, and found a site that explains the Anniversary Update.

What does it say if you look in Settings and then look at "Update and Security" then "Advanced Options" then "view your update history"?0 -

Yes.What does it say if you look in Settings and then look at "Update and Security" then "Advanced Options" then "view your update history"?
There's a long list.
Which particular one are you interested in?0 -
The most recent ones with today's date. There are some mundane ones like updates for Flash Player, Malicious Software Removal Tool, but what else is there?Bedsit_Bob wrote: »Yes.

Looking at my PC (it hasn't displayed the messages), the latest one is:-
Comulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3173428)
On my tablet , the latest one is:-
Comulative Update for Windows 10 (KB3140745)
Failed to install on 06/08/2016
There's also 5 other updates (for Internet Explorer Flash Player, Comulative Update for Windows 10, Security Update for Adobe Flash Player, Update for Windows 10, and another Update for Windows 10), all showing as failed.
However, when I move back a couple of screens, it shows a couple of updates (Definition Update for Windows Defender and Upgrade to Windows 10) installing, and waiting for download respectively.0 -
So the PC is running version "1511" of Windows 10. 1511 represents the date (2015/ 11th month- November 2015), and the Anniversary Update will be version 1607, for July 2016 (although in practice it was generally released on 2nd August). The labelling on cumulative updates shows which version of Windows 10 it applies to. The PC should get the Anniversary Update sometime soon; although I imagine they're spreading it out over a few weeks rather than upgrading everyone at once.Bedsit_Bob wrote: »Looking at my PC (it hasn't displayed the messages), the latest one is:-

Because this one isn't for "version 1511", I think your tablet is still running the July 2015 version of Windows 10. Did the winver command show 10240.something?Bedsit_Bob wrote: »On my tablet , the latest one is:-

The Upgrade to Windows 10 is presumably the one trying to upgrade itself to the 1511 version; although it's possible it will skip a version and go straight to the 1607 version.Bedsit_Bob wrote: »However, when I move back a couple of screens, it shows a couple of updates (Definition Update for Windows Defender and Upgrade to Windows 10) installing, and waiting for download respectively.
However, given it's had since November and not installed by now, I'm wondering if there's an issue which is stopping it. Does that Upgrade to Windows 10 show as a failed update on earlier dates?
My first guess would be lack of disk apace on the tablet; given it will need space for a Windows.old (which is a copy of the earlier version so it can give you an option to rollback). Is there much space free on it?
Incidentally I find that opening Windows Defender and using the Update option within Defender itself can sometimes unblock the update process.0
