Probate forms

Options
I'm just about to start filling out the forms for letters of administration and payment of Inheritance Tax.

As I haven't got a clue what I'm doing I'm just thinking if I mess up really badly and make a lot of mistakes on the forms where could I get additional forms from? I don't have a printer so can't download any that way. If I phoned the probate office would they send me more forms? If the worst comes to the worst and I can't get them anywhere else, do solicitors keep these forms in their offices? Maybe I just might have to admit defeat and hand over all the paperwork to a solicitor for him or her to do a proper job.

Thanks.

I just wrote my answers out in a notebook and only transferred the info over to the form when I was sure it was right. You can buy a Pilot Frixion Erasable Pen for less than a couple of quid. Perhaps you ought to invest in one of those!

If you open up the forms on the PC in Acrobat you can fill them in online (much less likely to make a mistake and can amend them easily). Could you then email them to someone you know with a printer or print them off yourself at the library or similar?

If it's a straightforward estate it seems a shame to pay a solicitor when you don't have to - in fact it would probably be worth the £30 for a cheap printer to avoid using a solicitor!

Edited ; I've just searched online and you can have a document printed online and posted to you for less than £4 with someone like doxzoo.com

If there is IHT to pay then investing in a cheap all in one to print copy scan will probably be worth it and would be an allowable expense.
Even without IHT it is probably worth it.

If not sure about numbers just have a sheet of paper for each page and once you have it all done transfer to the forms.

Or go and get some photocopies done to use as your working copies...

I made a number of mistakes on the IHT form and realised I'd have to do it over; asked for a new form via the Probate Registry helpline which took 4 weeks to arrive!
I did try to print off the IHT 217(?) form myself but the background and the box numbers printed off in a very pale colour AND some of the fonts came out like Dingbats!!!:rotfl:

Basic with wifi will be <£30.

at a push might even find one under £20

the convenience of being able to print inquiry letters and making copies of things will be worth it.
  • Thanks for your replies. I will start writing in pencil and then use pen when I am satisfied everything is ok. If that doesn't work out I think I will go to the library and use their printer.

    Thanks.

One thing I've found with .gov.uk forms is that they often don't 'work' properly unless you're using Internet Explorer (and now hopefully Edge, but I haven't had to do that yet!) and Adobe Acrobat.

It is immensely frustrating when Other Browsers Are Available and generally preferable, but that's the way it is ...
